Purpose: The purposes of this study were to explore depression, attitude toward the menopause, sleep quality, and perceived health, and to identify the associated factors of depression in the community dwelling middle aged women.
Method: This study utilized the descriptive correlational design using self-administered questionnaire. The data were analyzed by SPSS 17.0 using descriptive statistics, and hierarchical regression analysis.
Results: The level of depression was low, sleep quality was high, women¡¯s attitude toward the menopause was positive, and perceived health was relatively good. The general regression model with depression as a dependent variable was statistically significant (F=11.203, p£¼.001). 20.2% of variance in depression was explained by attitude toward the menopause (t=-4.283, p=£¼.001), sleep quality (t=2.706, p=.007), comorbidity (t=2.644, p=.009). Among predictors, attitude toward the menopause had the greatest effect on depression (¥â=-.279). The middle aged women with the more negative attitude toward the menopause, the lower sleep quality, and the higher comorbidity score reported the greater depression.
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested that the various aspects of clients" characteristics including physical, sociocultural, psycho-emotional dimensions and life patterns should be considered when assessing and providing the nursing intervention for women with depression.
